Khmer Arts and Dance

The Cambodia Academy places a strong emphasis on Khmer arts and traditional dance, cultural treasures that connect our students to the history and identity of their country.

During the Khmer Rouge period in the late 1970s, much of Cambodia’s artistic heritage was deliberately targeted. Artists, musicians, and dancers were persecuted, and many traditional art forms were nearly lost. Preserving and reviving these traditions is an important part of Cambodia’s cultural recovery.

Through instruction in traditional Khmer dance and the arts, our students learn not only the movements and techniques, but also the stories and cultural meaning behind them. These practices help students develop discipline, confidence, and respect for their heritage. Most importantly, they foster pride.

 

Participating in Khmer arts and dance creates a powerful connection to their country’s history and culture, helping our students see themselves as part of a tradition that is resilient, beautiful, and worth preserving for future generations.
